Shaped Up and Shipped Out

Dropped the missus off at the airport this morning. She's coming to a town near you to complete the first leg of her West Coast tour. I've prompted her to seize the blogging steering wheel and report on all of the nuances and intricacies involved with returning home after six months away. Hilarity is sure to ensue.

Eulogy for Zap

Zap the Bat met his demise last week, finally falling six feet under. That is, falling the six (more like twelve - but I'm making a pun here, bear with me) feet from his previous haunts of dangling on the power lines outside our house. Leading up to the final descent, Zap wasn't looking too hot, not being half the bat he once was. His head wasn't really attached anymore, sort of swaying amongst a matted mesh of fur and wing. We think the lorikeets might have gotten into him, thinking his little bat ears were sunflower seeds.

All that's left of Zap now is a single clenched claw, with his right wing/wrist a mere wispy string, flowing in the breeze. To his very end, Zap showed his defiance, gripping on to what he belived in and held dear. For that, we admire him.

Many didn't care for Zap, the neighbour's dog included, who had trouble digesting his unique style of humor. We, however, considered him a friend. He would dutifully watch over our parked cars at night, and consistently tell us which was the wind was blowing and above all, reminded us of our own mortality, whether rodent, marsupial or mammal.

Thank you Zap the Bat, you will be missed. (sniff)
